愛するものを亡くしたとき、悲しみのあまり心身ともに衰えることを言います。この言葉を読むたびに、このお話を思い出します。シュリ・オーロビンドについてのことです。

シュリ・オーロビンドは２０世紀に生きた、偉大なスピリチュアルな師です。インド南部のポンディチェリにアシュラム「スピリチュアルなコミュニテイ」を設立し、世界中の人々の注目をひいています。

シュリ・オーロビンドはもともとインドの英国のよる支配からの自由のために戦う活動家でした。勉強しに、英国に渡り、ケインブリッジ大学での教育を受けるうちに、非常に鋭敏な頭脳の持ち主として認められます。スピリチュアル・ライフに入ろうと決心し、多くの極めて深い内的体験を覚えます。社会開放活動をやめ、勉強で表れた優れた頭脳的才能が何倍も拡大し、人間のマインドの最も高い可能性を実現した「スーパーマインド」と呼ばれる意識状態に達成すると見られます。

留学からインドへ帰ろうとするときのことです。乗って帰る予定の船が事故に遭って、沈没してしまいます。このニュースを聞いたお父さんはあいきこつりつして、亡くなってしまいます。しかし一番悲劇的なことは、都合によってあの乗る予定だったはずの船にさえ乗っていませんでした！後で何か別の船で、インドへ無事に生還します。

Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) was a spiritual Teacher, who has an ashram in Pondicherry, South India, which is quite well known. Many Westerners have been connected with it.

Sri Aurobindo began his public career as a revolutionary , fighting for the freedom of India from English rule. He went to study at Cambridge University in England, and soon distinguished himself as a mind of the highest order.  This trait became magnified when, after having decided to enter the spiritual life and having several profound spiritual experiences, he attained a state of consciousness which people call the `Supermind`.  It is said to be the absolute perfection, the ultimate achievement and realization of the highest possibilities of the human mind.

Sri Aurobindo was set to return home from England by boat. Then tragedy struck. The boat on which he was supposed to return met with an accident at sea and sank. His father, hearing this news, fell into deep sorrow, and eventually died of a broken heart. This is aikikotsuritsu. But the real tragedy of the story is that Sri Aurobindo was not even on the boat he was originally scheduled to ride. He arrived safely back on Indian shores on a later ship, and went on to fulfil a momentous role as spiritual Teacher.
